To Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge with 8 year old, Evelyn, from Gaithersburg, MD!
Evelyn earned a Girl Scout patch and a Junior Refuge Manager patch for all she learned about the environment. Here's what she has to say about her experience.
"I went to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. That is where park rangers work to protect wildlife. I got a junior refuge manager patch because I learned what the rangers did. They protect endangered species, such as Piping Plovers and Delmarva Fox Squirrels. To protect the plovers, rangers put wire fences around their nests, so people don't step on them. To protect Delmarva Fox Squirrels, rangers make squirrel boxes so they have a safe habitat. They also protect non-endangered species, especially migrating birds. To protect these birds rangers make artificial freshwater ponds so the birds can swim and eat. The Refuge was founded to protect snow geese. Now, snow geese aren't endangered anymore. When you protect endangered species, you protect a lot of other animals, too. Another thing that is cool about Chincoteague is that they also protect wild and famous horses. I had fun learning about wildlife."
