Work Type: Hybrid – The expectations for this position range from full-time in-office work to a blend of remote and in-office work, to travel to facilitate events at public lands, depending on the needs of the Park Trust

We work closely with the National Park Service to acquire privately owned lands to expand and complete our national parks. In addition, our Youth and Family Programs support our belief that our public parks, lands, and waters should be cared for, enjoyed by, and preserved by all for current and future generations.

Position Overview

We are seeking a self-motivated and mission-driven Programs Coordinator to assist with the organization’s Youth and Family Programs. The new staff member will help plan and execute park trips for various Park Trust stakeholders.

The Programs Coordinator will work closely with our local and national partners to plan and track program details and logistics. Creativity and flexibility are necessary at this busy nonprofit that gets things done!

The Programs Coordinator will be responsible for supporting our:

  • Military Family Programs
  • College Ambassador Program
  • Buddy Bison School Programs
  • Kids to Parks Day
  • ParkPassport mobile app
  • Other new programs that are initiated

Willingness to travel overnight (by plane, car, or train) and work on weekends is required. Willingness to actively engage in the great outdoors (camp, hike,   rock climb, fish, paddle) is also required.

Since our office is in Rockville, MD, candidates must be willing to relocate if they do not reside in the DC metropolitan area. This staff member will support the Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships and the Senior Programs Coordinator.

This staff member will also work closely with our Youth & Family Programs team and other staff on various aspects of their work.

Position Description
  • Support our youth & family programs by planning and assisting park trips, focusing but not limited to the DC metro area.
  • Work closely with collaborative partners (including government agencies and other nonprofits) in DC and other areas of the country as assigned.
  • Assist with operational aspects of Kids to Parks Day, working with external partners (local and national) and internal team members.
  • Assist with Buddy Bison School Program park trips as assigned.
  • Assist with ParkPassport mobile app data entry and other tasks.
  • Prepare written reports for park outings and communicate clearly with the appropriate senior staff member regarding all trip aspects.
  • Contribute to regularly scheduled department and monthly staff meetings.
  • Develop detailed program planning materials.
  • Maintain an organized collection of photos, partner testimonials, and other collateral for development, communications, and marketing.
  • Assist the communications team in creating social media, newsletters, and website content to increase engagement.
  • Coordinate and assist with special event planning as needed.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Passion for the Park Trust’s mission.
  • 1-2 years of program planning experience.
  • Ability to work effectively with a team or independently and meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and pay careful attention to details.
  • Professional and effective communicator (written, phone, and in-person).
  • Creative, proactive, and open to expressing new ideas to improve program efficiency and effectiveness.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, Google Suite, and WordPress is preferred. Canva is a bonus.

Physical Requirements
  • Some physical exertion is associated with park activities.
  • Lifting items up to 45 lbs.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a car.
  • Local and overnight travel may be required.
