The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in cooperation with the National Park Trust, presented its 2005 Art & Essay Contest open to all students of Kansas. The contest was separated into two categories: Artwork and Essays. The theme for artwork was “Springtime on the Prairie”, and was to be completed on media no bigger than 8.5 x 11”. Essays focused on the theme, “Understanding our Prairie ecosystem.” Essays from contestants in grades 1-3 were a maximum of 100 words, grade 4-5 a maximum of 250 words, and for grades 6-8 a maximum of 500 words. All work must be original.
Winners are selected by a panel of judges from Kansan. The First Place prizes are awarded in each category, for each age group. Winners in grades 1-5 are given a $50 US Savings Bond and winners in 6-8 grade receive $100 US Savings Bond, donated by Farmers & Drovers Bank of Kansas. In addition, there are incentive prizes for second place winners and teachers of students with first and second winning entries. If needed, grant money will be available for travel of classes with winning entries. Each winner and his/her respective English or Art class will be invited for a free specially guided tour of the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.
