It is important to protect the
Tallgrass. The Tallgrass is grass that is special to us. Some kinds of tallgrass
are the little bluestem grass, switch grass, and big bluestem grass. There are
other kinds of Tallgrass, too, but the other three are the most important.
Tallgrass plants have a useful root system. The roots on the Tallgrass go very
deep into the ground to find water. The Tallgrass was once in ten midwestern
states including Kansas.
There are many reasons why it
is important to protect the Tallgrass. First, animals need it to live. Cattle
and wildlife depend on it for their food. Second, we have always had it and it
would be sad to see it disappear. The Tallgrass once covered 400,000 square
miles in the U.S. Today, there is about 4,000 square miles. Third, the soil will
not was away as easily. The grass keeps the water from taking all the soil and
dumping it somewhere else. It takes a long time to grow soil. Fourth is the food
production. The cattle eat the grass and that is how we get good meat. The last
thing is the beauty. It reminds us how peaceful life can be. You can sit back
and relax and see the rolling hills that go on forever and the beautiful
flowers. Don’t we want our children and grandchildren to see this beauty?
