Awards The Buddy National Teacher Award “The Buddy” National Educator Award For Outstanding Environmental Stewardship recognizes an educator whose innovative use of the Buddy Bison program has made a significant impact in his or her students’ understanding of the natural world and the importance of protecting our nation’s treasured parks. This year we honored Bobby Caballero, Dean of Students and René Hayden, a 3rd-grade teacher at Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. American Park Experience Award The American Park Experience Award is given to an individual or group that has made outstanding contributions to enhance the awareness and appreciation of our nation’s parks, wildlife refuges and/or historic landmarks. Vento Public Service Award is given annually to a public servant who has demonstrated a lifetime of outstanding service, skill, resourcefulness or innovation in the preservation of land, water or historic resources for the legacy of America. Recognition OAK Leaf Award In the fall of 2016, Outdoors Alliance for Kids (OAK) presented NPT with an inaugural OAK Leaf Award which recognized our “leadership and collaboration in connecting kids with nature.” Executive Director Spoke on White House Panel Executive Director Grace Lee was a panelist at the OAK meeting at the White House which focused on youth outdoor programs during the Obama Administration. Buddy Bison Students Featured on PBS Correspondent Kavitha Cardoza featured our efforts to get kids to parks on PBS NewsHour hightighting Buddy Bison School Pennycook Elementary’s visit to Muir Woods. Buddy Bison is One of Hoda's Favorite Things Buddy Bison and Buddy Bison’s Yellowstone Adventure, written by Dr. Ilona Holland and published by National Geographic Kids, were featured on the Today Show as two of Hoda Kotb’s favorite things.
