The North Face Awards National Park Trust Explore Fund Grant
Explore Fund Program dedicates $500,000 getting more kids outside
Washington, D.C. – July 7, 2015 –The North Face today announced that National Park Trust (NPT) will receive a $10,000 Explore Fund Grant that will benefit NPT’s Buddy Bison School Program and Kids to Parks Day National School Contest.
“We are very excited about the opportunity to continue our important work with The North Face,” stated Grace Lee, National Park Trust executive director. “Our multi-year partnership through the Explore Fund has resulted in transformational park experiences for thousands of under-served youth across the country.”
The North Face Explore Fund will be used by NPT to continue their work with Buddy Bison students that reside in homeless shelters in New York City. These at-risk youth in middle and high school will participate in a series of trips to parks this summer that will introduce them to careers in parks and in the outdoor industry. The Explore Fund Grant also provides support for NPT’s Kids to Parks Day National School Contest which awards park scholarships to Title I schools nationwide. Students design and plan trips to local, state or national parks and public lands that integrate their school curricula, outdoor recreation and park stewardship. For most of these students impacted by the Explore Fund, this is their first park experience.
The North Face selected a total of 47 organizations engaging more than 30,000 people in outdoor recreation focusing on projects that use outdoor exploration as the catalyst for positive, personal or societal change, provide experiences that nurture an appreciation of the outdoors or encourage participants to try new outdoor activities that allow outdoor exploration and adventure.
Dedicated to preserving parks today and creating park stewards for tomorrow, NPT was voted one of the top grantees for 2015, because of their ability to connect under-served students with parks to cultivate passionate outdoor enthusiasts and park stewards. A 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, National Park Trust was established in 1983. Over the past 31 years, NPT has completed more than 100 park preservation projects benefiting 49 national park units and other public lands in 33 states and Washington, D.C. In addition, to address the growing disconnect between our youth and the outdoors, NPT created the Buddy Bison School Program in 2009 and national grassroots movement, Kids to Parks Day in 2011. In April 2015, NPT’s youth programs were selected as a National Park Service Centennial Challenge Project – a 1 to 1 match of $450,000 leveraging a $10 million congressional appropriation. The total $900,000 (including matched funds) will be used to connect under-served urban kids to our national parks in celebration of the Centennial of NPS in 2016.
As part of its mission to start a global movement of Outdoor Exploration, The North Face introduced the Explore Fund (www.explorefund.org) in 2010 and the program has since provided more than $1.5 million in U.S. grants to more than 300 non-profit organizations committed to inspiring the next generation of outdoor explorers and conservationists.
