For 36 years, National Park Trust (NPT) has preserved and protected our national parks through the acquisition of high-priority parklands. To date, these efforts have benefited 44 national park sites. NPT also understands the critical importance of engaging children with our treasured natural, cultural, and historic areas, by building a pipeline of future outdoor enthusiasts and conservationists that reflect the rich diversity of our country. Since 2009, this has been accomplished through NPT’s two national youth outdoor education initiatives: the Buddy Bison School Programs and Kids to Parks Day.

Position Overview:
NPT seeks an Education Coordinator to support our growing national youth programs. This position will primarily involve working with all aspects of the Buddy Bison School Programs, which provides 250+ Title-I schools across the country with unique park experiences and educational resources focused on parks, public lands, and the outdoors. Primary responsibilities include administering and organizing park field trips and facilitating all logistics required for teachers and students. It may also require support for NPT’s annual Kids to Parks Day National School Contest which provides approximately 100 grants to schools across the country. Candidates may also be asked to support the Buddy Bison Student Ambassador Program or the Mascot Program. Candidates must have strong writing, communication, and outreach skills, the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and a vision for the growth of the program. Candidates must also have the ability to build strong relationship with program sponsors, schools officials, and teachers. A strong interest in working with students is also required. Those with previous teaching experience and a passion for parks and the outdoors are strongly encouraged to apply. This is a full-time 40 hours/week position.

 

Youth Education Programs (90%)

  • Assist in all aspects of NPT’s national youth outdoor education programs, primarily the ongoing major expansion of Buddy Bison School program
  • Administer and coordinate field trip experiences for Buddy Bison schools nationwide
  • Facilitate all logistics and serve as program lead for Buddy Bison event with parks, schools, and various program partners; prepare trip sheets and track funding from donors for specific schools
  • In-state and out-of-state travel will be required for Buddy Bison school events
  • Prepare written reports on Buddy Bison trips and maintain clear communication regarding all trip aspects with Director of Youth Programs
  • Contribute to weekly agenda for youth programs meetings
  • Maintain and expand the Buddy Bison Student Ambassador program
  • Facilitate the Buddy Bison mascot costume rental program
  • Draft articles for NPT’s monthly student newsletter, Buddy Bison’s Buzz
  • Develop education materials, including press releases, resource toolkits, and social media if needed; create NPT youth programs protocols if needed
  • Assist in the implementation of annual Kids to Parks Day National School Contest

Website Management/Other Responsibilities (10%)

  • Assist in maintaining NPT student website (buddybison.org); upload articles and create new content
  • Assist Director of Youth Programs in preparing materials for board reports
  • Use social media to enhance NPT’s visibility and reach

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum 4-year college degree from an accredited college or university
  • Prior teaching experience is strongly desired
  • Passion for parks and the outdoors
  • Willingness to travel to work with teachers and students and partners
  • Strong communication skills (written, phone and in-person). Written documents will include email communications, newsletters, press releases, website content, social media, and other needs that arise
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Able to multi-task and keep focus on long term and short term goals and needs
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team or independently, as needed
  • Self-starter, ability to work on multiple projects at once
  • Creative and open to expressing new ideas to improve programming
  • Familiarity with web development, particularly WordPress, is a plus
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel spreadsheets
  • Basic understanding of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)
  • Basic Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator skills are highly recommended
  • Willing to be flexible with hours depending on the needs of the organization
  • Able to troubleshoot, with the flexibility to adapt to the program’s changing needs.
